Suspension ends for Mucem president

Pierre-Olivier Costa, the president of the Mucem, announced on Sunday that he would return to his role at the Marseille museum after a four-month suspension that ended on October 31. The Ministry of Culture confirmed the suspension period had officially concluded.

Return to duties and plans

Costa stated he had resumed his duties since midnight on Sunday and planned to return to his office on Monday to begin making decisions and managing the museum. The interim president, Anne-Marie Le Guével, informed staff that she was stepping down and restoring his rights, according to Costa.

Conflict with trade unions

Costa had been in conflict with trade unions since he took over the Mucem in November 2022. His suspension was ordered by the Ministry of Culture to ease tensions and improve communication with the unions, following an investigation by the Igac into "cases of discomfort" at the museum.

Investigations and legal matters

The suspension also followed a criminal investigation into allegations of moral and sexual harassment, based on a report under Article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure from the Ministry of Culture. Costa said he had not yet been formally addressed regarding these matters.

Lack of communication during suspension

Costa noted he had minimal contact with the Ministry of Culture during his suspension and suggested that their lack of action indicated they had little to reproach him with. A general staff meeting is planned for Monday, as announced by the museum president.

Trade union criticism and remaining mandate

In a letter to Minister Catherine Pégard, trade union representatives criticized the management for creating a "toxic" environment and cited numerous issues. Despite this, Costa intends to complete his remaining two-year mandate, claiming a "very good" record.
