LIV Golf players seek DP World Tour exemptions

Several players from LIV Golf are reportedly negotiating guaranteed invitations and exemptions with the DP World Tour, prompting some members of the circuit to oppose what they consider overly favorable treatment. Eddie Pepperell described the situation as a "betrayal." Golf Planète questioned some French golfers on the issue, who support the return of LIV players but with conditions.

Negotiations include conditions

According to Today's Golfer, several LIV Golf members are currently negotiating with the European circuit for agreements guaranteeing a specific number of invitations, provided they do not sign up for LIV 2.0. Golf Digest reported that players and agents mention more than ten potential exemptions that could be granted to LIV players.

Criticism from current DP World Tour members

Joost Luiten criticized LIV players who "had nothing to do with the DP World Tour" and "want to come back and act as if nothing had happened" after having "made the decision to chase money." Ewen Ferguson expressed irony on X, stating it was "hilarious" to see some players who had long criticized the circuit now calling it the "best thing that has happened since the invention of sliced bread."

Support for Pepperell's stance

Eddie Pepperell's comments were supported by other DP World Tour tournament winners, including Richard Mansell, Jorge Campillo, and Marco Penge. Pepperell, who recently lost his card, wrote in The Chipping Forecast that "betrayal seems to be the right word," expressing concern about inevitable resentment or disdain for the DP World Tour.

Calls for fairness in return

Adrien Saddier retweeted Pepperell's reaction, stating, "Nobody speaks better than Eddie." Lee Westwood, who can return to play on the DP World Tour after settling fines, discussed the "delicate situation" and the risk of "giving invitations to players who have shown no interest in the circuit until now, except now that they have nowhere else to play." He referenced Jacques Dutronc's song L'Opportuniste, suggesting that players benefiting from an exemption should be free to return, but those without exemptions should go through the same process as others.

Conditions for LIV players' return

Tom Vaillant, 65th in the Race, stated that if LIV players return without any category of play, they have "nothing to do on the DP World Tour." He argued that if they return through category 10 with sufficient points, or through other criteria such as being former tournament winners or Ryder Cup participants, it would be beneficial for the DP World Tour. However, he opposed granting free years or full-year invitations to those without legitimacy.

Economic importance of LIV players' return

The economic aspect is crucial for the DP World Tour, which is going through a difficult period. Its strategic alliance with the PGA Tour helps it sustain itself. The arrival of many "stars" from LIV Golf for the 2026-27 season could boost the circuit. Romain Langasque, a member of the DP World Tour Players' Committee, noted that the European Tour is not in a strong position on the sponsorship front, and adding names like Bubba Watson, Cameron Smith, and Dustin Johnson could benefit the DP World Tour economically.

Mixed reactions to LIV players' return

Ugo Coussaud, who will be in Abu Dhabi next week due to several withdrawals of top-ranked players, stated that it is positive for the Tour to welcome back these players, despite finding their previous attitude "a bit hypocritical." He hopes the Tour will make good use of them, as they are "superb players."
