Adam Silver, commissioner of the NBA, said that talks with the EuroLeague are still happening, even after EuroLeague clubs turned down the latest proposal from the NBA. Silver expressed confidence that a deal could still be reached, though he did not exclude the possibility of moving forward without the EuroLeague's support. Silver made these comments during an interview with CNBC at the NBA China Games 2026 in Macao. He dismissed concerns about tensions with the EuroLeague, saying that regular discussions are ongoing. He acknowledged the EuroLeague's key role in European basketball, along with national championships. The NBA is pushing forward with its "NBA Europe" project, which aims to create a new basketball league in Europe. Silver said the league is continuing to develop this plan and hopes to reach an agreement with the EuroLeague. However, the NBA has stated that it is ready to proceed with its European expansion even if the EuroLeague does not participate. The proposed league could include current basketball clubs, major European football brands, and new teams created from scratch. Target cities include London, Paris, Madrid, and Munich. Early financial interest in the project has been strong, with franchise bids reaching "several hundred million dollars." The NBA aims to launch the new competition by 2027, but without a deal with the EuroLeague, the start could be delayed until 2028. Some EuroLeague stakeholders have criticized the NBA's approach as "colonialist and unacceptable," but Silver said that talks are expected to continue, with a counter-proposal from the EuroLeague expected in the coming weeks.
