Shaun Edwards has joined the coaching staff of the England women's rugby team, just three months after leaving his role as the defense coach of the French XV. The former French defense coach has now become a consultant for the Red Roses, the nickname for England's women's team. Edwards had previously told the Daily Mail in an interview published on September 19 that he was "ready and open to offers." The English Rugby Federation (RFU) responded three days later by officially announcing his appointment as a consultant for the Red Roses. Edwards, who is 59 years old, is joining the English team this week for a mission that will last until the end of the WXV, a global women's rugby tournament. He will be present for Saturday's test match against New Zealand at Twickenham and will stay with the team until the competition concludes, according to the RFU. On the Red Roses' bench, Edwards will reunite with John Mitchell, the current head coach, whom he has long faced on the international stage. Mitchell said, "Shaun and I have faced each other on the international stage for a long time and I have enormous respect for what he has achieved. I look forward to working with him and learning from him." Edwards previously coached the French defense from 2020 to 2026 and had also shaped the defensive lines of the Wasps and Wales before his French stint. Just three months after leaving the French team, he joins England, this time on the women's side: a rapid switch that confirms his profile remains sought after on the international stage. It must be said that the former French coach has a particularly interesting resume: he has won seven Six Nations tournaments, three with the French team.
