Comp AI, a startup focused on cybersecurity and compliance, has announced that it has raised $34 million in a Series A funding round. This round was led by venture capital firms Roo Capital and Grand Ventures. The company was founded in January by Lewis Carhart, who serves as CEO, and the Fuentes brothers, Claudio (COO) and Mariano (CTO). Claudio and Mariano had been collaborating on startups for nearly a decade before meeting Carhart a few years ago. They invited him to join LeapAI, a workflow platform they were developing. At that time, Claudio was CEO and co-founder, Carhart was head of growth, and Mariano was a senior full-stack engineer.
LeapAI operated for about two years and grew to more than a million users before being shut down. The team decided to discontinue the project after finding it difficult to identify a "sticky enough use case" to justify continued investment. This experience taught them valuable lessons about building with large language models (LLMs), the importance of focusing on specific use cases, and the complexities of SOC 2 compliance — a set of standards for managing customer data and ensuring security controls — especially when scaling to enterprise clients.
Comp AI is now building an agentic platform designed to streamline tedious security and compliance tasks. This involves using AI agents to help draft company security policies, collect evidence for audits, and continuously monitor whether a company is meeting compliance requirements. The platform does not replace human oversight or independent audit reviews. Instead, it works alongside human workers who help onboard the AI, support compliance controls, and maintain the workflow. For example, an AI agent might draft a policy, but a person would still review and approve it. As agents perform more critical actions, the level of human approval and safeguards is expected to increase accordingly.
The company also offers AI-powered penetration testing, which involves proactively testing codebases and infrastructures for vulnerabilities. With this new funding, Comp AI plans to expand its product offerings. To date, the company has raised a total of $37.5 million. As more companies adopt AI technologies, there is a growing need for platforms that provide continuous and autonomous security and compliance monitoring. Comp AI aims to address this by focusing on permissions and accountability, ensuring that AI agents operate within defined boundaries and that their actions are traceable and verifiable.
