A trial took place on a beach on the island of La Comtesse in the Côtes-d'Armor region on Thursday. The unusual setting brought together jurors, judges, lawyers, the accused, and the victim's relatives. Thierry Meunier, 63, is on trial for the murder of his wife, Véronique Duchesne, which occurred in 2010. This marks the first time in years that the court of assizes has left its usual location to hold a trial at the actual crime scene. The relocation was aimed at helping the court better understand the events of that day, particularly what the last witness saw and whether Thierry Meunier was indeed responsible for his wife's death. The trial has been ongoing since September 21, and the victim’s body was discovered on October 9, 2010, in a cove near the small island, which is accessible on foot during low tide. At the time of the incident, Thierry Meunier suggested that his wife may have committed suicide by drowning. However, an autopsy later confirmed that Véronique Duchesne died from strangulation, supporting the theory of murder. The victim's family believes Thierry Meunier is responsible, citing his inconsistent schedule and the unusually long time it took him to report her disappearance. Thierry Meunier has lived in Senegal since 2014 but was arrested in November 2022 and extradited to France in December 2023. Described as a manipulator and a person with financial debts, he denies the charges. During the trial, he was seen sitting on a rock on the island, wearing a bulletproof vest secured by prison officers. The court of assizes, known in legal terms as having "moved," traveled to the island to examine the site, including distances and the layout of the area. This request was made by the victim's family, and the Ministry of Justice notes that such procedures are rare and require the approval of the court's president. According to the Rennes Court of Appeal, transporting the trial to the crime scene allows the court to make direct observations that can help uncover the truth. This practice, while uncommon, is used when it is deemed necessary to better understand the circumstances of the crime. The relocation of the trial to La Comtesse highlights the significance of the location in the case and the family's efforts to ensure that justice is served.
