From August 17 to 23, 2026, Freida McFadden's book Le Dîner (City, translated by Karine Xaragai) remained at the top of the bestseller list, selling 25,100 copies. This was the eighth week the book held the top spot, but the sales number marked an 8% decrease compared to the previous week's total of 27,365 copies. The cumulative sales for Le Dîner now stand at 340,000 copies. Amélie Nothomb's L'Adolescence du perroquet (Albin Michel) entered second place with 11,508 copies sold. This marks Nothomb's first significant success of the 2026 literary season. Earlier in 2025, her book Tant mieux sold 13,576 copies but only reached the 8th position. L'Adolescence du perroquet surpassed Freida McFadden's La Prof (J'ai lu, translated by Karine Forestier), which sold 11,183 copies and dropped to third place. Other notable entries in the bestseller list include Tata by Valérie Perrin (Le Livre de Poche) at 4th place with 8,619 sales, Celle qui sait by Riley Sager (Verso, translated by Dominique Haas) at 5th place with 8,224 copies, and Les Heures fragiles by Virginie Grimaldi (Le Livre de Poche) at 6th place with 8,136 sales. Freida McFadden's other books, including La Psy, La Femme de ménage voit tout, and Les Secrets de la femme de ménage, occupied positions 7th through 9th, respectively. Freida McFadden's books now account for 58,936 sales, or 57.5% of the copies sold by the ten best-selling books. A week earlier, her books represented nearly 67% of the Top 10 sales. La Femme de ménage, the first volume of the series, dropped out of the Top 10 and is now at 11th place with 7,080 sales. Several new books published in mid-August showed significant progress in the Top 200. L'Inconnue du quai de Javel by Philippe Jaenada (Flammarion) gained 76 places in a week and reached 18th place with 5,239 copies. Lakota by Caryl Férey (Gallimard) moved from 83rd to 35th place with 3,366 sales, while Le Pays des étés by Pierre Adrian (Gallimard) gained 109 ranks to reach 58th position with 2,592 copies. Among the new arrivals this week, C'était ça ou mourir by Thélyson Orélien (Grasset) entered 32nd with 3,668 sales, and Le Palais by François-Henri Désérable (Gallimard) started at 54th place with 2,665 copies. In bookstores, the literary return already weighs much more heavily. Amélie Nothomb's L'Adolescence du perroquet (Albin Michel) leads with 5,704 copies, ahead of Le Dîner by Freida McFadden (4,102). Philippe Jaenada's L'Inconnue du quai de Javel (Flammarion) jumped 23 places to 3rd with 3,635 sales, while Thélyson Orélien's C'était ça ou mourir (Grasset) entered 5th with 2,472 copies. François-Henri Désérable's Le Palais (Gallimard) is 9th with 2,015 sales, and Pierre Adrian's Le Pays des étés (Gallimard) climbed to 10th place with 1,894 copies. Freida McFadden's dominance appears much less crushing in this circuit: after Le Dîner, 2nd, La Prof only reaches 11th place, while La Femme de ménage, La Femme de ménage voit tout, La Psy, and Les Secrets de la femme de ménage are between 26th and 33rd places. This gap confirms the role of bookstores as the main ground for the literary return. The book market rebounded sharply in week 34, with 5,074 million copies sold, an 11% increase over a week, for a turnover of 61.6 million euros, up 13%. The recovery is mainly driven by bookstores, whose sales increased by 20% to 1,687 million copies and turnover by 22%, to 22.1 million euros. Specialized large stores also progressed by 11% in volume and 12% in value, while food retail remained against the trend, with sales down 3% and turnover down 1%. However, the rebound is not enough to erase the accumulated delay: the market is still 10% below that of the same week in 2025, both in copies and turnover.
