Serge Pizzorno of the British rock band Kasabian has spoken about his disciplined approach to music creation, a shift from his earlier days when he would push himself to the limit—often living on just three days of sleep in pursuit of inspiration. Now, Pizzorno focuses on a structured routine in his home studio, located in rural Leicestershire. Known as "The Sergery," the studio is a stark black cube, tucked inside a gated house shared with his wife, Amy, and their two dogs. The space is designed for efficiency: no snacks, no phones, and no lunch breaks. A giant gorilla sculpture guards the entrance, and inside, a gong and four bobblehead Kasabian dolls add a touch of whimsy to the otherwise austere environment. Kasabian is set to release their ninth album, Act III, in 10 days. The album includes a range of tracks, such as Soulmate, a tribute to his wife, and Say You (Closer), which features layered harmonies similar to those of The Eagles. Pizzorno explains that the album’s focus on "Tunes You Can Sing™" is a deliberate response to what he sees as a lack of melody and strong hooks in modern music. The track Hippie Sunshine stands out with its chant-like chorus and a piano-driven breakdown, offering a critique of the influence of algorithms and the culture of tech oligarchs. Pizzorno highlights the role of boredom and small moments of inspiration in the creative process. He uses a Moog DFAM desktop synthesizer to experiment with sounds, emphasizing Kasabian's commitment to quality over quantity. Act III includes 10 songs, all of which Pizzorno considers setlist-worthy. The album has been previewed throughout the summer, including a major headline performance at London's Finsbury Park in June, which marked a significant moment for the band. Six years ago, Kasabian faced a major setback when their former singer, Tom Meighan, was sacked the day before his conviction for assault. Pizzorno described the pain of that moment but noted that the band refused to let the story end there. Taking on the role of frontman has changed his life, leading him to adopt a more disciplined lifestyle—running instead of drinking before shows, inspired by his wife’s near-championship marathon training. He aims to create unforgettable live experiences for fans. While he jokes about the possibility of a 10th album, Pizzorno also comments on the potential for Kasabian to perform at Oasis’s rumored Knebworth shows next summer, though he admits he has yet to confirm the rumor.
