Stellantis reveals retro EVs at Paris Motor Show

At the Paris Motor Show, automotive group Stellantis has unveiled a strategic shift, showcasing retro-inspired electric vehicles including resurrections of the Citroën 2CV, the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16, and the coupe RCZ. This decision contrasts with previous management claims that retro designs were not viable for the future of its brands.

Renault 5 E-Tech drives Stellantis' strategy

The move is partly attributed to the success of the Renault 5 E-Tech, which has become the top-selling electric car in France, followed closely by the Tesla Model Y despite its higher price. This indicates a growing consumer interest in electric vehicles with a blend of practicality and style.

Stellantis addresses brand image through design

Stellantis has previously struggled with an image deficit, as its models lacked the allure to drive impulsive purchases. To address this, the group has hired Gilles Vidal, a designer previously with Peugeot and Renault, who now oversees the design of all Stellantis brands.

Electric 2CV aims for affordability

The electric Citroën 2CV, scheduled for 2028 around 15,000 euros, may be homologated in the heavy quadricycle category L7e to keep costs down. However, Peugeot is showcasing concepts with solid-state batteries and 500 horsepower, while Renault has already launched sporty versions.

Hybrid and electric options coexist

The Alfa Romeo concept coupe features a V6 hybrid engine, indicating that pure electric vehicles remain one of several options for Stellantis. The future impact of the Chinese brand Leapmotor entering their distribution network remains to be seen.
