The Arts theatre, currently undergoing major renovations, has set up a new base near Marble Arch, where it is now presenting a jukebox musical called Million Dollar Quartet. This show is based on a real-life event from nearly 70 years ago, when Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis gathered at Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios in Memphis. The impromptu meeting, which led to the recording of around 40 songs, was famously dubbed the "Million Dollar Quartet" by a newspaper at the time. While the musical includes many of the songs from that session, it omits some, such as "Down By the Riverside" and "Peace in the Valley," and also features "Great Balls of Fire," which was recorded at Sun a year later.
The set design by Libby Watson cleverly transforms the modest studio space into a vibrant rock’n’roll diner with a retro jukebox-like arch and checkerboard flooring. The show, which originally premiered in 2006 and later played in London’s West End in 2011, has now been transferred from Cirencester’s Barn theatre. It blends historical facts with creative storytelling, offering a mix of charm and humor. However, the script sometimes struggles to balance the characters’ backstories, with some dialogue feeling more like summaries of their lives than natural conversation. Despite this, the show highlights the camaraderie and rivalry among the four musicians, as well as the challenges they faced with record labels.
Jonathan O’Boyle’s production features four actor-musicians who bring energy and charisma to their roles. Connor Payne portrays Elvis with a stylish, well-groomed look, while Christopher Erasmus captures Johnny Cash’s brooding intensity. Joe Bence plays Jerry Lee Lewis with wild, exuberant energy, and Joey Bradick embodies Carl Perkins as a driven, focused performer. Alongside musicians Josh Haberfield and Geraint Downing, they deliver powerful renditions of classic songs, making even familiar tunes feel fresh. The show also features a performance of "Fever" and "I Hear You Knocking" by Dyanne, Elvis’s girlfriend in the production, played with confidence and flair by Jenay Naima.
Million Dollar Quartet is now running at the Arts theatre at Marble Arch in London until 6 December, after which it will tour across the UK until 17 July. The production offers a nostalgic look at the early days of rock and roll, with a mix of music, history, and the personal stories of four iconic musicians.
