Mozambique's rice import growth

Mozambique is the third-largest rice importer in the Southern African Development Community, after South Africa and Madagascar. The country has significantly increased its rice imports in recent years, driven by a growing demand that local production has struggled to meet.

Mozambique seeks foreign investment

To reduce its reliance on imported rice, Mozambique is inviting foreign investors to collaborate with local businesses. During the Bharat International Rice Conference 2026 in New Delhi, the Mozambican government encouraged partnerships with Indian companies to boost local rice production and processing capabilities.

Visiting Indian rice processing technology

A Mozambican delegation visited the rice processing plant of Moi Commodities India in Kurukshetra, Haryana, to study advanced processing technologies, automation systems, packaging methods, and quality control measures. The goal is to adapt these techniques for use in Mozambique’s agro-industrial sector.

Rice import data shows rising costs

Mozambique’s imports of processed rice have grown from 433,000 tons in 2022 to 643,000 tons in 2025, representing a 48.5% increase. The cost of these imports has also risen, reaching 395 million dollars in 2025, with a peak of 485 million dollars in 2024.

Local rice production remains low

Despite efforts, Mozambique’s national rice production has fluctuated and remains below 2022 levels. According to FAO data, production dropped to 161,920 tons in 2023 and only slightly recovered to 169,311 tons in 2024, still 31.1% lower than in 2022.

India's global rice leadership

India is a major player in the global rice market, with production expected to reach 152 million tons in the 2025/2026 season. Its expertise in rice processing and exports is attracting interest from African countries like Mozambique and Kenya, which are looking to improve their own agricultural sectors.

Kenya explores rice partnerships in India

Kenya is also seeking foreign investment to boost its rice production. A Kenyan delegation visited India to explore partnerships with companies like Pattabhi Agro Foods and United Port Services, aiming to develop a rice project on over 14,000 hectares in the Tana River county. Both Kenya and Mozambique are in the early stages of forming these international collaborations.
