Microsoft has introduced new options in the August update for Windows 11 (KB5120998) that allow users to adjust the size of the Start menu. This feature provides three size options: Automatic, Small, and Large. The Small option is particularly useful for users with smaller screens, as it helps save valuable screen real estate by reducing the Start menu’s footprint. However, these settings are being rolled out gradually, so not all users may see the new options immediately. Along with the size adjustments, the update also introduces changes to how the Start menu can be customized. Users can now choose to show or hide specific elements such as pinned apps, recent items, and the full list of all apps. Additionally, users can hide their account name and profile picture from the Start menu. These settings can be accessed through the Settings app by navigating to Personalization > Start. It’s important to note that even after installing the August update, some users might not see the new options right away. Microsoft is distributing the changes progressively across different versions of Windows 11, including the 24H2 and 25H2 updates. If the settings are missing, it’s not necessarily a problem with the update itself. For users eager to enable these features immediately, a third-party tool called ViVeTool can be used. This utility allows users to manually activate the new settings. Instructions involve downloading the correct version of ViVeTool from GitHub based on the computer’s architecture, extracting the files, and running specific commands in Command Prompt. After restarting the computer, the new settings will appear in the Personalization menu. If users wish to revert the changes, they can use reset commands in Command Prompt and restart the PC.
