The public beta of Ubuntu 26.10 is now available for download and testing. Canonical, the company behind the Ubuntu operating system, has included components such as an unfinished version of the Linux kernel 7.3 in the release. The beta was originally scheduled for September 24 but was delayed by a week and was made available on October 1. Those interested have less than two weeks to perform their tests, as the final version is still planned for October 15.
This first beta includes all official editions of the Ubuntu distribution. These editions range from the standard Desktop version to specialized versions such as Server, WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux), and Cloud. Other editions include Edubuntu for education, Kubuntu for KDE desktop users, Lubuntu for lightweight systems, and several others tailored for specific user needs or hardware configurations.
Ubuntu 26.10 will be an intermediate version, meaning it will not be an LTS (Long Term Support) release. LTS versions are supported for five years and receive updates every two years, while intermediate versions are supported for nine months and are updated every six months. Users who have installed Ubuntu 26.04 will not automatically receive the new version unless they change the associated settings.
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the current Long Term Support version, can now be upgraded to version 26.04. This upgrade path allows users to transition to newer versions of the operating system while maintaining stability and security through the LTS support cycle.
