Orange leads in download speeds

Orange has moved to the top of the fiber speed rankings in France for download speeds, surpassing Free, which previously held the lead. This marks a significant improvement for Orange, which was last in the rankings a year ago.

Bouygues Telecom leads in upload speeds

Bouygues Telecom has taken the lead in upload speeds, pushing Free to third place and SFR to fourth. This shift indicates a growing competition among internet service providers in France.

Average speeds continue to rise

The average fiber download speed in France is now 511 Mbit/s, up 12% from the previous year. Upload speeds have also increased, averaging 420 Mbit/s, a 15% rise compared to the previous year.

Orange's significant improvement

Orange’s download speed has increased from 407 Mbit/s to nearly 543 Mbit/s, an improvement of about 136 Mbit/s. This is attributed to the generalization of very high-speed internet offers across the market.

Free's decline unexplained

Free has seen a notable drop in download speeds, from 561 Mbit/s to 505.5 Mbit/s over the past year. The study does not provide an explanation for this decline, despite the overall improvement in speeds across the industry.

Competitive market and improved latency

Fiber speeds have increased by 31% since the start of 2024, and upload speeds have more than doubled since 2018. Latency, or ping, has also decreased to 9.4 ms, which benefits online gamers and other real-time applications.

High-speed offers and Wi-Fi 7

The rise in performance is partly due to the spread of Wi-Fi 7, which allows better utilization of high-speed connections at home. Entry-level offers now start at nearly 500 Mbit/s, and high-end offers can reach up to 8 Gbit/s symmetric speeds.

Cautions about the rankings

The rankings are based on 458,295 speed tests conducted in 2025, a significant drop from the previous year. The report does not specify how many tests were conducted by each operator or the proportion using Wi-Fi versus Ethernet connections.
