A moviegoer in Los Angeles was arrested after allegedly using pepper spray on another attendee who was using their cellphone, according to local police. The incident took place at the AMC 16 theater in Burbank around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Witnesses reported hearing the aerosol spray being used inside the theater, prompting police to arrive at the scene. Authorities arrested 34-year-old Matthew Ware of Los Angeles on suspicion of misdemeanor battery. He was taken into custody at the Burbank Jail but was released the next morning, as reported by the Los Angeles Times. According to a witness who spoke with KTLA, Ware pepper-sprayed a person who was using their phone "about 40 minutes into the movie." Shortly after, the victim was heard screaming that they had been sprayed. The film playing at the time was The Uprising, a movie about a revolt in medieval England following a deadly plague. At least two people in the theater were treated at a hospital after being exposed to the pepper spray. Joe Rodriguez, a moviegoer who witnessed the event, told CBS News that the incident occurred in the back of the theater. He described it as "the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen happen at the movies." Rodriguez explained that the alleged victim was using their phone with the brightness turned down when another audience member approached and asked them to turn it off. When the man refused, the other person allegedly used pepper spray. Rodriguez expressed disbelief, stating, "This is insane. This grown man would resort to that." He added that while the person initially tried to resolve the situation verbally, the use of pepper spray was still unacceptable. Following the incident, the theater reportedly offered refunds to everyone present. The Uprising currently holds a 55 percent rating on the movie review site Rotten Tomatoes. Rodriguez admitted that he was not a fan of the film, saying, "To be completely honest, the movie wasn’t my cup of tea. I was more thrilled by what happened than the movie itself."
