Fuel prices have hit record highs, pushing drivers to explore alternative options like E85 and LPG to cut costs. E85, a type of biofuel, is currently priced at around 80 cents per liter and has remained relatively stable due to its national production and low taxes. This fuel, which is made up of 65 to 85% agricultural ethanol and 15 to 35% unleaded gasoline depending on the season, has been available for 20 years. This summer, sales of conversion devices by eFlexFuel, a specialist in fuel conversions, have doubled compared to the previous year, showing a growing interest in E85. To use E85, drivers need either a "flexifuel" vehicle or a professionally installed homologated conversion device. These installations typically cost between 700 and 1,300 euros, with some entry-level options starting at 690 euros. These devices are available at various auto centers, including E.Leclerc and Carrefour Énergie. The cost can be quickly offset, with an average driver saving up to 1,000 euros per year on fuel. LPG, another alternative, is priced at just under one euro per liter and has also seen stable pricing. It requires the installation of a second gas tank, costing between 1,500 and 3,500 euros. This makes the payback period for LPG longer, typically two to three years. However, LPG systems automatically grant the vehicle a Crit'Air 1 sticker, which is beneficial for urban driving. Both E85 and LPG conversions are free to register with the vehicle authority, though the owner must cover the shipping costs. These conversions are not available for diesel engines, but most gasoline vehicles produced after 2001, including hybrids, are compatible. Vehicles that can run on unleaded SP95-E10, which covers about 10 million cars in France, are eligible for conversion. Despite the cost savings, E85 and LPG both increase fuel consumption by around 20%, meaning drivers will need to visit the station more often. E85 is available at about 40% of fuel stations, while LPG is available at 30%. If these fuels are unavailable, vehicles can still run on regular unleaded gasoline without any issues.
