Kim Kardashian recently revealed she is dealing with a new health condition in the trailer for the eighth season of "The Kardashians." In one clip, she mentions she has been diagnosed with esophagitis, a condition that causes inflammation of the esophagus—the muscular tube that carries food and drink from the mouth to the stomach. In another part of the trailer, her mother, Kris Jenner, says the diagnosis "makes me want to cry." The revelation comes in the context of a family history of esophageal issues, as Kim’s late father, Robert Kardashian, died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59. Esophagitis can have several causes, according to Dr. Stuart Spechler, a gastroenterologist at Baylor University Medical Center. The most common type is reflux esophagitis, which is linked to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In this condition, the mechanisms that normally prevent stomach acid from flowing back up the esophagus are impaired, leading to irritation and damage. Symptoms often include heartburn and regurgitation. In some cases, chronic acid exposure can lead to a condition called Barrett's esophagus, where the lining of the esophagus changes to resemble intestinal tissue. This change is a known risk factor for a type of esophageal cancer called esophageal adenocarcinoma. However, Spechler emphasized that not everyone with esophagitis or Barrett's esophagus will develop cancer. He noted that the risk is relatively low, and women are less likely than men to develop Barrett's esophagus or esophageal cancer. Both conditions are diagnosed through endoscopy, a procedure that allows doctors to visually examine the esophagus and take tissue samples. Those with Barrett's esophagus often undergo regular endoscopies to monitor for early signs of cancer. The Kardashian family has a long-standing connection to esophageal health, as they helped establish the Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health at UCLA in 2019. The center was created to provide comprehensive care, research, and education on esophageal disorders. At the time of the center’s opening, the family expressed their commitment to honoring Robert Kardashian’s memory by supporting initiatives aimed at improving patient care and advancing research. They also pledged to raise funds for the center's ongoing efforts, hoping to make a lasting impact on the community and save lives in the future.
