A man has died after being bitten by a shark off Sorrento Beach in Perth’s northern suburbs. Emergency services were called to the popular beach around 10:30 am on Friday following reports of a shark-related incident. According to Western Australia police, the man was swimming along the coast when he was attacked by a shark. He later died from the injuries sustained in the attack. Emergency services, including both water and air units, conducted a thorough search of the area to locate the shark and ensure the safety of others. Witnesses described seeing a large pool of blood in the water after the incident. Jacqui Rapaic, a beachgoer, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp that her friend told her, "Jac, I think there's been a shark attack," and when she looked out to sea, she saw a pool of blood. Later, Ryan Rowe, a local who arrived at the beach shortly after the attack, said he was informed by an onlooker that someone had been bitten by a shark. He expressed disbelief at the amount of blood he saw, telling The West Australian newspaper, "I couldn't believe there was that much blood that had come out of a human body." As a precaution, authorities closed the beach to swimmers. In a separate incident, a surfer suffered serious leg injuries in a shark attack near Geraldton, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Perth. Reports indicate there have been either four or five confirmed fatal shark attacks in Australia this year, depending on the source. In the past four weeks of May and June, three spearfishing divers were killed by sharks off the Australian coast. Earlier this year, in January, a 12-year-old boy died in the hospital days after being severely injured by a bull shark in Sydney Harbour. Australia has experienced an average of two to three fatal shark attacks annually since the year 2000, according to the Australian Shark Incident Database. This database is a collaborative effort between the Taronga Conservation Society Australia, Flinders University, and the New South Wales state government. The data helps track shark incidents and informs public safety measures along the country’s coastal regions.
