Apple TV 4K supports four HomePod speakers

Apple's new Apple TV 4K allows users to connect four HomePod speakers to create a surround sound setup. This configuration uses two speakers at the front and two at the back, with automatic calibration to simplify installation without needing an amplifier or audio cables. The feature was introduced on October 13 as part of the Apple TV 4K's new capabilities.

Compatibility and speaker requirements

The setup requires the new Apple TV 4K and four compatible HomePod speakers. These include the HomePod mini 2, the second-generation HomePod, or a mix of both. The original HomePod mini models are not compatible with this configuration. Users must ensure they have identical front and back speaker pairs for the system to work properly.

Costs for different configurations

The most accessible configuration uses four HomePod mini 2 units, costing 169 euros each, totaling 676 euros for the speakers. Adding the new Apple TV 4K, which costs 349 euros, results in a total of 1,025 euros for a complete setup. Using four second-generation HomePod speakers alone would cost 1,596 euros, or 1,945 euros with the Apple TV. An intermediate setup with two large HomePods and two mini 2s would cost 1,136 euros for the speakers.

Comparison with Samsung's offering

Samsung offers its HW-Q930H sound system at 699 euros on promotion, compared to 899 euros without the discount. This includes a soundbar with 9.1.4 channels, two rear speakers, and a subwoofer. Apple's setup emphasizes compact speakers, ecosystem integration, and easy installation, but the price difference and other factors remain to be seen.

Limitations of Apple's setup

Apple has not specified how its four-speaker configuration will handle multichannel audio formats, especially with the HomePod mini 2. While larger HomePod speakers can reproduce Dolby Atmos tracks, the mini 2 has more limited acoustic capabilities. Apple has not planned a compatible subwoofer for this system, unlike many competing setups.

Wireless performance and features

The Apple TV can already retrieve sound from a console or player connected to the TV via HDMI ARC/eARC, including for HomePod mini speakers. However, Apple has not confirmed if this feature will work with four speakers. The stability and latency of this wireless setup, especially for video games, need to be tested. Apple has not mentioned compatibility with Dolby Vision 2 for its new Apple TV 4K, leaving the support of this dynamic HDR format unclear for now.

Value and sound quality considerations

Apple’s four-speaker setup offers a unique alternative to traditional home cinema systems, especially for users who already own compatible HomePod speakers. However, the cost of a complete entry-level configuration exceeds 1,000 euros. While the system's simplicity is a benefit, its success will depend on the sound quality and overall usability of the setup.
