Swiss company selects Gridle platform

The Swiss company PowerEdge AG has chosen the Gridle platform from Elisa Industriq to optimize and commercialize electricity from a 10 MW / 37 MWh battery system at Pelkosenniemi in northern Finland. The battery has a storage capacity of 37 MWh, which is roughly equivalent to four hours of power at full output.

Commercial operations planned for 2027

The Pelkosenniemi battery system is expected to start commercial operations in early 2027. Gridle will manage the battery's commercial operations, aiming to maximize its long-term revenue by using artificial intelligence to optimize market strategies and adapt to available opportunities.

Finnish battery market evolving

For PowerEdge, the Pelkosenniemi project reflects the changing landscape of the Finnish battery storage market. As balancing markets become more saturated, developers are looking to diversify their revenue streams by participating in multiple segments of the electricity market.

Focus on longer duration storage

Anssi Laitinen, CEO and co-founder of PowerEdge, noted that opportunities in Finland are evolving rather than disappearing. He emphasized the need for projects to capture value across a broader range of markets, which are becoming more volatile. This is why the company is focusing on storage solutions with a duration of four hours or longer.

PowerEdge’s expansion in Finland

PowerEdge specializes in battery storage for commercial, industrial, and large-scale grid-connected applications. The Pelkosenniemi project is its first large-scale storage project in Finland, and the company aims to build on this success to expand its portfolio in the country.

Gridle’s experience with long-duration batteries

Markus Logren, Gridle business head at Elisa Industriq, highlighted that long-duration batteries require advanced optimization, as value shifts between balancing markets and wholesale markets. He noted that Gridle has been optimizing this type of battery for over five years, making its experience particularly valuable for investors in large-scale storage systems.
