Last month, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces announced that the Direction générale de l'armement [DGA] would play a key role in launching the suborbital rocket Baguette One. This mission is intended to test the technological choices of the French company HyPrSpace for its future orbital rocket, OB1. The launch will take place at the DGA Missiles Test Site in Biscarrosse and is seen as a critical step for both the armed forces and HyPrSpace, which has set ambitious goals. The success of this launch is vital, as failure is not an option. HyPrSpace, founded in Bordeaux in 2019, is working on a new type of propulsion technology called "hybrid" systems. These combine liquid oxygen [LOX, an oxidizer] with a solid fuel made from high-density polyethylene [PeHD]. This combination has not been widely used in major launch vehicles before. The technology is expected to reduce the number of mechanical parts needed in a rocket engine, lowering costs and increasing the speed of operations. According to HyPrSpace, the fuel used is storable, non-explosive, and easy to transport, making launch operations more efficient. These launchers are designed for frequent use, which could help reduce costs and expand the market. The dual nature of the technology makes it suitable for both civilian and defense applications. To meet the rising global demand for space launchers, HyPrSpace inaugurated a 7,000-square-meter factory in Haillan, Gironde, on October 1st. Named La Boulangerie, a nod to Baguette One, the site includes two buildings: one for assembling launchers and another for manufacturing and testing them. The facility will house the company's 150 employees and support all stages of development, production, integration, and assembly. HyPrSpace aims to "strengthen France and Europe's sovereign capabilities for access to space" by offering competitive, efficient launch solutions for both civilian and defense needs. The company's goal is to produce up to 100 rocket engines and 15 launchers annually by 2030. Nicolas Billecocq, the CEO of HyPrSpace, stated that the new factory marks the beginning of a new industrial sector centered on hybrid propulsion technology. The company's ambition is to become a global leader in this field, which is seen as a strategic asset for the space sovereignty and security of France, Europe, and their allies.
