The 2022 Nobel Prize winner for literature has spoken out against the rise of the far right in France, calling for a cultural response to counter its influence. The laureate described an ongoing cultural conflict, noting that for years, a cultural offensive has been supported by private information channels, media outlets, and the promotion of specific themes such as immigration, identity, "wokism," assistanat (a term referring to the idea of prioritizing one's own country or people), national preference, history, and national symbols like the flag. This movement, the laureate said, seeks to shape public perception through these themes. In cities where the far-right National Rally (RN) has gained political power, the laureate observed that there is a strong emphasis on promoting folklore and heritage, often at the expense of contemporary cultural creation. This, the laureate noted, results in reduced funding for modern artistic and cultural projects. The laureate stressed the importance of finding ways to resist this shift, both by defending certain values and by preserving collective memory. According to the laureate, the far-right narrative tends to overlook the contributions of women, workers, and foreigners to France's development and history. The laureate also highlighted the importance of including diverse voices in cultural discussions. In this spirit, more than 250 artists and cultural figures contributed testimonies to a special 40th anniversary edition of Inrockuptibles, a French music and culture magazine known for its progressive stance. This edition reflects the laureate’s belief in the power of cultural expression to challenge dominant narratives and promote inclusivity. The laureate’s comments come at a time of growing political and cultural polarization in France, with debates over identity, history, and national values becoming increasingly central to public discourse. By emphasizing the role of the arts and cultural memory, the laureate is calling for a broader, more inclusive vision of French identity that acknowledges the country’s diverse past and present.
