Yan Diomande, a young and promising midfielder from Côte d’Ivoire, became a hot name in European football after his standout performances during the U.S. qualifiers. His impressive play led to a massive £115.7m transfer to Real Madrid, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world. Alongside Diomande, other emerging talents also found new homes. Johan Manzambi of Switzerland joined Aston Villa over Newcastle, while Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Kerim Alajbegovic moved to Juventus. Ghana’s Caleb Yirenkyi, now playing for Coventry in the Premier League, and Cape Verde’s Vozinha, who now plays for Chilean club Colo-Colo, also made notable moves. Meanwhile, Morocco’s Ismael Saibari joined Bayern Munich, one of Europe’s top clubs. Several big-name transfers happened ahead of international matches. Real Madrid signed Marc Cucurella for £52m just before Spain’s opener against Cape Verde, and Bernardo Silva was also signed before Portugal’s campaign began. Liverpool made significant investments, including a £34.5m deal for Víctor Muñoz in June and a £60m move for Jérémy Jacquet in early July. Tottenham spent nearly £230m on players like Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes, and Sandro Tonali before the World Cup’s last 16 stage, and also added Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers. In Germany, Bayer Leverkusen spent £32.8m on Kennet Eichhorn and Afonso Moreira in June. Brighton invested just over £50m in players like Zadok Yohanna and Pascal Struijk before the World Cup progressed beyond the last 32. In England, Hull City’s owner Acun Ilicali described the club as a “volcano ready to erupt,” and the club followed through by signing 18 players for £156.5m. Ipswich spent £194.7m on 15 new signings, and Coventry spent £122.4m on 11 players. This spending spree contrasts sharply with 2021, when the three promoted teams spent a combined £98.8m. In Ligue 1, 15 of the 18 clubs made a profit from player transfers this summer. Paris Saint-Germain led the way with a net profit of over £150m, largely due to the £123m sale of Bradley Barcola to Liverpool. Lille made around £100m, and Strasbourg earned nearly £90m by moving several players to clubs like Chelsea. In Italy, Fiorentina underwent major changes, sending 34 players out on loan or permanent deals, including Moise Kean and Tariq Lamptey. In contrast, Inter Milan signed high-profile players like John Stones from Manchester City on a free transfer and Djed Spence from Tottenham for £25.6m. Other clubs had varied approaches to transfers. Real Betis signed Troy Parrott for £17.1m from AZ, while Sevilla signed Robbie Ure for £5.6m after a stellar season in Sweden. Athletic Bilbao and Marseille were among the least active, with neither making significant new signings. Málaga, newly promoted to La Liga, signed seven players without paying any transfer fees, while Le Mans, new to Ligue 1, made nine signings with only two undisclosed fees.
