Wigan Warriors claimed their sixth League Leaders' Shield with a commanding victory over Catalans Dragons in the Betfred Super League. The match saw Wigan score nine tries, with contributions from players like Smith, Marshall (two tries), O'Neill, Farrell, Daniel, Field, Eckersley, and Keighran, who also kicked a goal. Catalans managed two tries from Tison and Lis, and two goals from Aispuro-Bichet and Garcia. This win continues Wigan’s strong form as they prepare for the Super League play-offs. Managed by Matt Peet, Wigan went trophyless in 2025 after their historic quadruple-winning season in 2024. This victory is their second piece of silverware this year, following their Challenge Cup win in May, and brings them closer to a potential treble. The match started with early tries from both sides, with Harry Smith of Wigan and Ugo Tison of Catalans scoring in the first half. Wigan took control with tries from Liam Marshall, Brad O'Neill, and Liam Farrell before halftime. In the second half, Austin Daniel and Jai Field extended Wigan’s lead, and Zach Eckersley, Adam Keighran, and Marshall’s second try sealed a 16th consecutive win. Catalans’ Alexis Lis scored a late try to give his team some consolation. Wigan’s victory secured the League Leaders' Shield, but the key moment came in their previous match against Leeds Rhinos. In that game, Wigan moved ahead of Leeds in the standings, ensuring they would retain the top spot. If Wigan had lost that match, Leeds could have taken the shield based on points difference. However, Leeds lost to Hull FC, allowing Wigan to keep the title. With their top-two position secured, Wigan will have a bye week and will host their Super League play-off semi-final on Saturday, 12 September, which will be broadcast live on the BBC. Catalans, meanwhile, finish the season in ninth place, failing to qualify for the end-of-season play-offs for the first time since their 2023 Super League Grand Final appearance, where they were also defeated by Wigan.
