Sony unveils a midnight black PS5 Digital Edition exclusive to Japan, set for release on November 19, 2026, alongside a shift toward digital game distribution.
Special PS5 version for Japan
Since the end of 2025, Sony has been selling a special version of the PS5 Digital Edition in Japan, locked in Japanese language. This version is designed for the Japanese market and cannot be used with accounts from other regions.New black PS5 announced
This Tuesday, October 13, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced a black version of the console, named "Midnight Black." It will be released on November 19, 2026, at the recommended price of 55,000 yen including tax, approximately 310 euros.Japanese market restrictions
Like the white model, the black PS5 is reserved for the Japanese market. Sony limits this console to use within Japan, requiring a PlayStation account set to Japanese language and in the Japan region. This restriction prevents users from other countries from using the console with their usual accounts.Technical specifications
Technically, Sony does not change anything compared to the standard PS5 Digital Edition. The console features an 825 GB SSD, part of which is reserved for the system, and includes a DualSense controller and the game Astro's Playroom pre-installed.Accessories and additional features
Sony also highlights accessories already sold in this color, such as the PlayStation Portal, a portable screen that allows remote play on a PS5. The console does not have a disc drive, and one must purchase it separately for 11,980 yen including tax, approximately 68 euros.Release timing and future plans
The console is released on November 19, the day of the release of GTA VI, which Sony mentions in its announcement. A week earlier, on November 12, the PS5 celebrates the 6th anniversary of its launch. Sony also noted that new PlayStation games starting in January 2028 will be sold only as downloadable versions. No international release planned
Sony has not announced any release of this black PS5 in Europe or the United States. In France, users must choose from the usual models, ranging from the PS5 Slim to the PS5 Pro.
