The Android version of the Vivaldi web browser now supports extensions from the Chrome Web Store, a feature introduced just a week after the release of its desktop version 8.2. In addition to offering a local calculator within the address bar, the Android version now allows users to install and use browser extensions. A puzzle piece icon in the top bar provides access to the Chrome Web Store, as Vivaldi is built on the open-source Chromium platform, similar to Chrome and other browsers. Users can browse the Chrome Web Store directly from Vivaldi on Android, select an extension, and download it directly to their device. Once installed, the extension appears in the browser's interface, and users can pin frequently used extensions for quick access. Vivaldi also gives users the option to enable extensions on all websites or restrict them to specific sites, offering greater control over their browsing experience. However, the browser’s publisher notes that not all desktop extensions are compatible with mobile devices, and extensions themselves cannot be synchronized across devices. This means users will need to download and install extensions separately on each device they use. Despite this, Vivaldi allows for the synchronization of extension data between the desktop and mobile versions, making it easier to manage extensions across devices. While both Firefox and Microsoft Edge also support extensions on Android, they do not integrate directly with the Chrome Web Store like Vivaldi does. Chrome itself is not listed as a mobile browser in this context, possibly to discourage mobile users from installing ad blockers or other extensions that might reduce advertising revenue. Vivaldi, however, includes its own built-in tools for blocking ads and tracking elements, providing users with privacy-focused browsing options.
