Court suspends demonstration ban

The administrative court has suspended a decree issued by the Paris police prefecture (PP) that aimed to ban a demonstration organized by Interfac Île-de-France. The demonstration was originally scheduled for Thursday and will now proceed as planned.

Demonstration details and location

The event, organized by Interfac, will take place starting at 14:00 between Pitié-Salpétrière and Bastille. It involves students from university general assemblies and is expected to draw a large crowd.

Reason for the ban and its suspension

The PP had issued the decree on Wednesday to ban the demonstration, citing the "inability of the organizer to prevent acts of violence." This concern was based on previous gatherings. However, the decree was suspended after a hearing by the judge of the administrative court's reference chamber, though the reasoning was not disclosed.

Interfac members prepare for the demonstration

Members of Interfac were reported to be heading to the demonstration’s meeting place. Coppélia Moreau, a member of the group, stated that the ban was an attempt to "touch the very right to demonstrate" and that the group contested it to prevent the government from using repression to impact mobilization.

Moreau highlights the scale of mobilization

Moreau emphasized that the government must recognize the "massive" nature of the mobilization, which includes young students and high school students who are not organized or part of unions. She noted that the mobilizations bring together unionized individuals, political activists, and those participating in their first such event, suggesting the government is "afraid of this."
