A new study by the French Institute of Fashion (IFM) reveals that Shein, Temu, and AliExpress together accounted for nearly a third of online clothing purchases in the first seven months of 2026. This represents a significant increase from 19% in 2025, showing the growing influence of these Asian-based platforms in the European market. The study was presented during a press conference with the Federation of Online and Distance Sales (Fevad), which represents online retailers in France.
In addition to online sales, these three platforms made up 8% of all clothing purchases by volume, whether made online or in physical stores. This is a two percentage point increase compared to the previous year. Shein, known for its fast fashion model, has climbed to the second position in the market by volume, behind the French retailer Kiabi and ahead of the second-hand platform Vinted. Temu, which is eighth in the rankings, saw a notable rise, moving up seven positions.
The growth of these platforms appears to be slowing down, possibly due to new regulations. Starting on July 1st, the European Union introduced a tax of 3 euros per small package sent from China, which is expected to increase further with additional processing fees in November. According to the Ministry of Economy, this measure has led to a 30% to 40% drop in imports from these platforms in the EU. The IFM also reported a slowdown in the "ultra fast fashion" trend in July, with Shein, Temu, and AliExpress collectively accounting for 25% of online clothing purchases—down four percentage points from the January to July period.
The decline in traffic to these platforms was also notable. According to Fevad and Médiamétrie, Temu's traffic dropped by 36.4% compared to the same period last year, while Shein saw a 42.3% decrease and AliExpress experienced a 10.4% drop. Marc Lolivier, general delegate of Fevad, noted that this is the first time he has seen all three platforms experience a decline. He urged caution, acknowledging their ability to adapt to market changes.
