Mac.apk (free) is a software project currently in development that allows Android apps to run on Mac computers equipped with Apple Silicon chips. The goal of the project is to make Android applications behave as closely as possible to native macOS apps. This means that Android apps appear in the macOS Dock with their own icons, open in standard windows, and run without the need for an emulation layer or a virtual machine. The approach is similar to how Apple has enabled iOS apps to run natively on Macs, but this project applies the same concept to Android apps. The project is still in its early alpha stage, and as a result, users may encounter bugs and inconsistencies. During testing, some apps, like TikTok, failed to launch and crashed at startup. Other apps, such as the game Mindustry, were able to open and run correctly, though there were still some issues, such as problems with sound and a touchscreen-oriented interface that may not be ideal for use on a desktop. The developer has proposed technical solutions, such as simulating a smartphone's gyroscope using keyboard keys, to help users navigate these challenges. Despite the workarounds, the project successfully fulfills its promise and can be useful for Android users who want to access their favorite apps on a Mac. Some interface bugs were noted, particularly when resizing windows, but the apps remained usable overall. Mac.apk is currently in the alpha stage, with a beta version still under development. Future updates are expected to bring improvements and greater compatibility. To install Mac.apk, users can either download an APK file from a site like APKMirror or use app stores such as F-Droid or Aurora. For apps that require verification, users will need to connect a Google account to Mac.apk for proper functionality. The software is free for personal use but is not open source, even though its code is hosted on GitHub. The GitHub repository is used to provide installation instructions, distribute compiled versions, and collect user feedback and reports of app incompatibilities. To try Mac.apk, users must download the latest update from a specified address (choose the latest file macapk.dmg), and the system requires a Mac with Apple Silicon and macOS 26.4 or higher. The interface is currently only available in English.
