Revolut and Visa have conducted the first real-world secure payment initiated by an artificial intelligence in France. The test, part of Visa's Agentic Ready program, used a digital assistant and secure payment technology called Visa Payment Passkey (VPP). This technology replaces traditional passwords with biometric verification, such as fingerprint or facial recognition. The payment was made using a consumer Revolut card on a real European merchant platform, Cleverbridge, demonstrating how AI could be integrated into everyday financial transactions.
The experiment aimed to explore how AI could handle real purchasing scenarios while ensuring customer consent, security, and control. According to Revolut, the AI agent, with the user's permission, could perform multiple steps of a purchase, including searching for products, comparing options, and initiating payment. However, the AI does not directly handle the financial transaction. Instead, Visa's VPP authenticates the customer, processes the payment through its network, and applies fraud detection measures, while Revolut decides whether to approve the transaction.
The test focused on common consumer scenarios, such as purchasing an antivirus software under a specific budget. The AI would identify and purchase the best option, but the final payment step was handled securely by Visa and Revolut. This marks a shift in how users interact with payments, as customers no longer need to manually click "pay" — they can delegate this action to AI within the boundaries they set. Both companies emphasized the importance of maintaining existing security protocols while adapting to new technologies.
The experiment comes as AI tools become more prevalent in consumer decision-making. According to the Digital Barometer 2026, 51% of the French population already uses generative AI tools. This follows a similar experiment in March by Spanish bank Santander, which, in collaboration with Mastercard, completed the first AI-driven end-to-end payment in Europe. Revolut, which has 80 million customers globally, including 8 million in France, aims to shape the future of payments by integrating AI while maintaining security and transparency.
Revolut's Western Europe head, Béatrice Cossa-Dumurgier, highlighted the growing role of AI in changing how people shop and pay, stressing the need for secure and user-controlled systems. Visa’s European head, Florence Mélique, noted that trust will be a key factor in the future of AI-driven payments. Revolut, founded in 2015, has seen rapid growth, recently reaching a valuation of $115 billion after a major share sale in July.
