Disney+ has introduced a new feature called Playlists, which organizes movies and TV shows into categories based on genres, franchises, characters, or even moods. This feature aims to create a more relaxed, "lean-back" viewing experience, allowing users to sit back and watch without actively searching for content. With Playlists, subscribers can pause, rewind, or skip to the next title, offering greater control over their viewing session. Unlike traditional browsing, which requires users to search for individual titles, Playlists provide a curated flow of content. For example, users can watch a continuous stream of episodes from shows like Modern Family, The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, and Family Guy, similar to how a 24-hour TV channel might operate, but with the added flexibility to skip ahead or rewind. This feature is intended to reduce the effort required to find something to watch, especially for those who prefer a more passive approach to streaming. Disney+ already offers themed Collections, but Playlists take this concept further by focusing on a more seamless and customizable experience. Seasonal Playlists, such as those themed around Halloween or other holidays, are expected to be added throughout the year, offering fresh content options aligned with different occasions and moods. The Playlists feature has drawn comparisons to Netflix’s former "Play Something" option, which allowed users to watch a randomized selection of titles. However, Netflix discontinued the feature in 2021 due to low user engagement. Disney+’s version, however, appears to be more structured and tailored, offering a balance between convenience and choice for its subscribers.
