A trial is currently underway in Nigeria involving Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, a 46-year-old driver accused of causing a fatal crash that killed two of boxer Anthony Joshua’s close friends. The incident occurred in December when Kayode was driving a Lexus SUV while attempting to overtake a moving truck. He lost control of the vehicle and collided with a parked lorry, resulting in the deaths of Latif Ayodele, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength coach. Kayode is facing charges of dangerous driving and driving without a valid national license, but he denies the allegations. The group had been traveling to visit Joshua’s father in Ogun State, near Lagos, when the crash happened. According to court testimony, the passengers were asleep at the time of the accident. Another defendant, Abubakar Adamu, 35, the driver of the stationary lorry involved in the crash, is being charged with obstructing the free flow of traffic. However, he also denies the charge. Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo from the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division explained to the court that by the time he arrived at the scene, both the damaged SUV and the lorry had already been removed. However, police found debris from the crash and soya beans scattered on the road, which had fallen from the lorry’s load. Inside the Lexus, officers recovered a logbook, painkillers, and an energy drink near the driver’s side. Notably, police have yet to obtain a statement from Anthony Joshua regarding the incident. During the trial, Kayode’s lawyer questioned Inspector Ajayi about the lack of a statement from Joshua. The inspector responded that efforts to contact Joshua were ongoing and that he had not been able to reach him because he “didn’t have his number.” The court adjourned the trial until 10 September to allow for further investigation. Anthony Joshua, who was born in Watford, England, has family roots in Sagamu, a town in Ogun State, near where the crash occurred. Following the incident, Joshua paid tribute to his late friends on social media, expressing his grief and loss. The case has drawn attention due to the high-profile nature of the victims and the boxer’s connection to the region. As the trial continues, investigators are working to gather more evidence and statements to determine the full extent of the circumstances surrounding the crash. The outcome of the case could have significant legal and emotional implications for those involved.
