A Cider Festival is set to take place in Beton-Bazoches, Seine-et-Marne, on Sunday, October 11, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The event celebrates the apple in all its forms, showcasing locally produced cider, apple juice, and traditional crafts through a brocante, or flea market. This annual event has been held every second Saturday of October since 1984, drawing hundreds of visitors from the surrounding area. It highlights the region’s agricultural heritage and local traditions. The festival will take place in the town’s church square, where visitors can see the large manual press of Beton-Bazoches, a historical artifact of the city. This press, located on Rue Tessier, was built in 1850 by Désiré Naveau, who was a companion of the Tour de France, a famous cycling race. The press will be accompanied by a gadage, a large stone container where a mill turns to grind apples. This impressive setup will be used by a local cider maker who will press the fruit to produce juice for sale and tasting on site. At the time of its creation, the press was capable of producing hundreds of hectoliters of apple juice, thanks to its double press system that operated in alternating cycles. This made it a highly efficient tool for local production. In addition to the cider-making demonstration, the festival will feature a fast food stand and a local charcutier, or butcher, who will prepare sausages. These sausages are an important part of French gastronomy and have long been paired with apples in traditional dishes. The festival offers a unique opportunity to experience the history and craftsmanship behind cider production, while also enjoying local food and crafts. It brings together the community and visitors to celebrate a beloved regional tradition in a festive and educational atmosphere.
