Senegal launches AI initiative with Gates Foundation

Senegal has launched the "Senegal AI Scaling Hub" in partnership with the Gates Foundation to accelerate the integration of artificial intelligence into essential sectors such as health, education, and agriculture. The initiative aims to move AI projects from the experimental stage to large-scale deployment.

Program components focus on infrastructure and coordination

The program is based on three complementary components: the development and deployment of AI solutions in priority sectors, public digital infrastructure including digital identity and data exchange mechanisms, and a structure responsible for monitoring project implementation and strengthening coordination between administrations.

Interoperable infrastructure and data quality are key challenges

The initiative highlights the importance of interoperable digital infrastructure and accessible, reliable data for effective AI deployment. In the health sector, diagnostic assistance tools and patient monitoring require structured medical information, while in agriculture, forecasting and advisory services depend on accurate data on crops, soils, and weather conditions. Additional challenges include the need for computing infrastructure, skill development, and sustainable financing.

UNDP report emphasizes data and governance for AI success

A September 2026 report by the United Nations Development Programme (PNUD) noted that while computing capacity is important, the adoption of AI also depends on data quality, user skills, governance, and the existence of applications that meet real needs.
