In recent months, Moldova has experienced a sharp increase in Russian drone incursions, with 17 drones crashing on Moldovan territory in August alone—equaling the total number recorded for the entire year of 2025. These incidents have raised concerns among residents, particularly in villages near the Ukrainian border, where the presence of drones has intensified the atmosphere of fear. Officials are questioning Moscow's motives, while experts offer several possible explanations, including the use of Ukrainian anti-aircraft jamming and the testing of Chisinau's response capabilities. The village of Crocmaz, located close to the Ukrainian border, has become a frequent target of these drone attacks. Residents there have grown accustomed to the sounds of war, with explosions often disrupting their sleep. Alexandru Juc, a 75-year-old local born in the village, noted that the detonations no longer surprise the people. Since the summer, Russian drones have been increasingly present in the area. On August 9, a drone-missile crashed in an abandoned field less than 300 meters from the village. Sergiu Pascal, who was in his garden at the time, described the incident, explaining that a fragment from the explosion penetrated his house, breaking glass and damaging the chandelier. His wife experienced a sudden spike in blood pressure due to the fear and trauma of the event. In Palanca, another village near the border, residents continue their daily routines, but the constant threat of drone attacks has created a pervasive sense of anxiety. Angela Dudnicenco, the director of the local school, expressed concern that many people live in fear, and children are increasingly asking if the war will reach their homes. Artur Lescu, a security expert, explained that while Moldova is not seen as a direct military target, some drones may be deliberately sent to instill fear and test how the authorities respond. The attack on the Starokazacie border post on September 8, which resulted in at least two deaths and several injuries—including a Moldovan citizen, according to Ukrainian authorities—has heightened fears of future attacks on Moldovan soil. This incident has further underscored the growing tension in the region and the potential for increased conflict spilling over into Moldova.
