Employee defends store during protests

An employee of Micromania became a subject of online attention after defending his store during protests in France, which were sparked by a crisis in the cost of living and deteriorating conditions in schools.

Violence and arrests during protests

According to Ouest France, more than 2000 people were arrested during violent incidents that included looting and damage to stores, with merchants forced to rebuild their establishments after windows were broken and stores were looted.

Pierre's actions during the incident

Pierre, a salesperson at a Micromania branch in Nice, was seen in videos attempting to protect the entrance of his store while being harassed by protesters. In one clip, he was knocked to the ground with a kick while his back was turned.

Pierre's account of the event

Pierre stated that he simply stood in front of the store to prevent people from entering and that he was struck in the face by projectiles. He expressed uncertainty about the events and admitted his actions may have been reckless, though he felt it was necessary at the time.

Broader context of the protests

Despite the looting, Pierre emphasized that such behavior was an exception rather than the rule during the demonstrations. He received support from social media users, but he also highlighted the broader issues faced by workers globally.

Online reaction and criticism

The incident sparked online parodies referencing the Dragon Ball franchise, though some of these parodies were criticized for becoming racist in nature.

Other affected businesses

Several other stores, including JD Sports, Décathlon, and Foot Locker, were also affected by the disruptions. In total, 15 businesses suffered damage, and 85 people were placed under investigation, including 40 minors.

Fundraising for Micromania

A fundraising campaign was launched to help the Micromania store recover, reaching just over 6,000 euros at the time of writing. The campaign described the manager, Jean Médecin, as having been "cowardly attacked by groups of vandals while courageously defending his store."

Unclear destination of funds

It is unclear whether the funds raised will be given to Pierre or the store itself.
