Nutri-Score updates oil ratings

Vegetable oils and whole grains are gaining ground with the new Nutri-Score algorithm, while sweet products and sweetened beverages are declining in the ranking. In France, the Nutri-Score algorithm now classifies olive oil as B, rather than C.

Scientific review drives changes

A decree dated March 14, 2025, approved this revision, which comes from the recommendations of a scientific committee of nutrition experts. On the shelf, choosing an oil, a fish, or a drink no longer responds entirely to the same criteria.

Oils with lower saturated fats get better grades

Like olive oil, canola oil and walnut oil gain a letter. According to sante.fr dedicated to this update, this reclassification concerns oils with the lowest levels of saturated fatty acids. The revision modifies the method applied to all added fats, beyond just oils.

Beverages and dairy face stricter scoring

Only water now earns the letter A in the beverage section. Less sweet references are progressing, but sweetened beverages are sliding from B to a rating between C and E. Milk, flavored milks, and drinkable yogurts also fall under this aspect of the Nutri-Score algorithm.

Fatty fish and whole grains improve

Sardines, mackerels, and other fatty fish rich in omega-3 also receive a better rating. Bread or whole grain rice are more clearly distinguished from their refined versions. Products that are too sweet or too salty receive a more severe rating.

Manufacturers have time to adjust

Engaged manufacturers have until March 2027 to update their packaging. Products that have been recalculated display a box labeled "New calculation" next to the logo. The scale retains its five letters, from A to E.
