Teacher charged with abuse

Christophe Gazel, a special educator at l’Eveil, an organization that supports children and adolescents with mental disabilities, faced an immediate criminal trial in Bastia. The trial followed allegations that Gazel had encouraged a sixteen-year-old resident, whose mental capacity was comparable to that of a nine-year-old, to send him nude and explicit sexual photos and videos via TikTok.

Mother discovers inappropriate messages

The incident came to light when the girl’s mother found her daughter sending such messages in her room. The mother then alerted the authorities, leading to Gazel’s arrest and subsequent trial. The girl was a resident of l’Eveil, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with mental disabilities.

Gazel found guilty of serious charges

Gazel was found guilty of sexual assault and corrupting a minor. He had been working at l’Eveil for approximately twenty years before the charges were brought against him. The court’s decision marked a significant legal outcome for the organization and its long-standing employee.

Sentence includes prison and probation

Gazel received a five-year sentence, with three years to be served in prison and the remaining two under strict probation. Probation conditions include mandatory treatment, compensation for the victim and her family, and a prohibition on contact with them. The prosecutor had initially requested a seven-year prison term.

Professional ban imposed

As part of the sentence, Gazel was permanently banned from any professional activities involving minors. This restriction ensures he cannot work in environments where he might come into contact with children or adolescents in the future.
