A zoo connected to India's influential Ambani family has denied claims that it illegally acquired critically endangered ring-tailed lemurs from Gazipur Safari Park in Bangladesh in March 2025. Reports suggest the animals were smuggled into India and sold to the private zoo, which is run by Vantara, a wildlife center in Gujarat supported by the Reliance Industries, a major Indian conglomerate. The allegations have sparked an international response, with Bangladesh's Criminal Investigation Department confirming that the lemurs were trafficked across the border for an estimated £504,000. Six individuals have confessed to their involvement in the smuggling, and the case is currently being handled by Bangladeshi authorities. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, has sought assistance from Interpol to track down the lemurs and return them to their country of origin. Officials plan to use DNA profiling from a juvenile lemur that was recovered to confirm its genetic relationship with the other animals. This step is crucial in verifying whether the animals are part of the same group that was smuggled. The process could help identify the exact number of lemurs that were taken and help in their repatriation. Vantara has categorically denied holding any animals that were illegally acquired or trafficked from Bangladesh. The zoo emphasized that it maintains thorough records of the origin and history of all its animals. It has also expressed willingness to cooperate fully with authorities, including participating in DNA testing to prove the legitimacy of its collection. This cooperation is seen as an important step in resolving the dispute and ensuring the animals' welfare. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges of wildlife trafficking and the need for international collaboration in protecting endangered species. While Vantara insists on its compliance with legal and ethical standards, Bangladesh continues to push for the return of the lemurs, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in wildlife conservation efforts.
