The energy check is a financial aid provided to households facing energy insecurity, which means they spend more than 10% of their income on energy costs. The amount of the check varies between 48 and 277 euros, depending on the household's reference tax income (RFR) and its composition. To be eligible, a single person must have an RFR of 10,800 euros or less, a couple without children must have an RFR of 16,200 euros or less, and a couple with a child must have an RFR of 19,440 euros or less. The check is usually sent by mail between the end of March and the start of April. This year, an extra 100-euro check will be distributed in December, which can be used until March 31, 2023. The energy check is delivered as a pre-filled, named voucher specifically for paying energy bills. It can be used to pay the full or part of electricity, natural gas, or domestic fuel bills. It can also be used for the delivery of firewood or other fuels used for heating or producing hot water. Additionally, energy renovation projects that meet the requirements of the energy transition tax credit and MaPrimeRénov program are also eligible for payment with the energy check. This includes residents living in Ehpad (residences for the elderly), autonomy residences, long-term care units, or APL-contracted housing, who can now use the check to pay their energy charges. There are three ways to use the energy check to pay a bill: it can be handed directly to an eligible supplier or service provider, sent by mail as part of a remote payment, or used online through the official website, Chequeenergie.gouv.fr. On this site, beneficiaries can enter the energy check number and the references of their supply contract to make the payment. Beneficiaries can also set up an automatic payment through the official site, allowing the energy check to be pre-assigned to an eligible service for future years. This can be done by checking the "pre-assignment" box directly on the energy check. If a beneficiary has not received their energy check, they can file a complaint with the Minister of Ecological Transition. They can call 0 805 204 805 from Monday to Friday between 8 am and 8 pm, or they can fill out a form on Chequeenergie.gouv.fr/beneficiaire/assistance. When filing the complaint, they should select "Complaint - Ineligibility" or "Complaint - Non-receipt" in the subject line. It is recommended to have the 13-digit tax number from the first page of the tax return before making the call.
