The Anglo-American choreographer Ruth Childs and the French visual artist Cécile Bouffard are exploring themes such as whims, bodily memory, and the lingering traces of folklore in modern life. Their collaborative installation and performance piece Such a Devoted Bunch examines the dynamics of devotion and obsession through movement and objects. The piece features three dancers—Marta Capaccioli, Cosima Grand, and Mona Felah—and delves into how shared enthusiasm is formed and how individuals connect and belong to one another. The performance portrays a community of bodies and objects that both attract and repel each other, navigating the tension between intimacy and collectivity, belief and release. Such a Devoted Bunch is the result of a collaboration between Childs and Bouffard, whose artistic approaches have proven to be complementary. The tactile experience of interacting with Bouffard's sculptures has had a profound impact on Childs, influencing her approach to movement and encouraging a sense of freedom and reinvention in her gestures. The performance blends elements of matter, sound, and movement into a multi-sensory experience, with scenography, sculptures, and costumes by Cécile Bouffard, lighting by Joana Oliveira, sound by Stéphane Vecchione, costumes by Coralie Chauvin, and technical direction by Rodolphe Martin. Bryan Campbell acts as the external advisor or observer. The production is by Scarlett’s, with co-productions from Pavillon/ADC (Geneva), La Comédie de Geneva, La Bâtie Festival de Geneva, Arsenic—Centre d'art scénique contemporain (Lausanne), and Atelier de Paris/CDCN. It receives financial backing from Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels, the Fondation Ernst Göhner, and the Stanley Thomas Johnson foundation. The project has included residencies at the Watermill Center in New York and La Ménagerie de verre. The Company Scarlett’s/Ruth Childs benefits from a joint support agreement between the City of Geneva, the Canton of Geneva, and Pro Helvetia, which runs from 2024 to 2026. The performance will be staged at Atelier de Paris – Centre de développement chorégraphique national from 19 to 21 November 2026, as part of a co-production with the Swiss cultural center and the Autumn Festival in Paris.
