Jamie Carragher, a former Liverpool defender and current pundit, has suggested that Arsenal may have missed a key opportunity this summer by not pursuing Bradley Barcola, a 24-year-old French winger who recently joined Liverpool for £123 million. Barcola, who won the Champions League twice with Paris Saint-Germain, signed with Liverpool in the final days of the transfer window, securing a five-year deal. Carragher believes Arsenal should have prioritized Barcola earlier, especially after it became clear they would not be signing other top targets like Vinicius Jr or Julian Alvarez. Arsenal had shown interest in Barcola earlier in the summer but shifted their focus to other options. Over the past two transfer windows, the Gunners have been looking to strengthen their left wing, with previous targets including Rodrygo and Anthony Gordon. This summer, Vinicius Jr, a star at Real Madrid, opted to stay with his club after rejecting multiple offers, while Julian Alvarez, an Argentina international, was reportedly seeking a move to Barcelona instead of joining Arsenal. In addition to missing out on these high-profile targets, Arsenal has also let go of two key left wingers from last season. Leandro Trossard has joined Turkish side Besiktas, and Gabriel Martinelli is set to move to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal for £60 million. Carragher has criticized this approach, saying the left wing is now the weakest part of Mikel Arteta’s squad, and not signing Barcola could be seen as a missed chance to strengthen that area. Carragher shared these views on the latest episode of Stick to Football, noting that the left wing has often been the weaker side compared to Arsenal’s other attacking options like Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and Kai Havertz. While young player Christos Tzolis has started well in his debut season, Carragher questioned whether Barcola would have been a better fit given the missed opportunities with Vinicius Jr and Alvarez. Arsenal legend Ian Wright echoed these sentiments, stating that Barcola, coming from a top-tier club like PSG, would have been the ideal signing for Arsenal, and that missing out on him, along with Morgan Rogers, who joined Chelsea, was a significant oversight.
