Zoe Ball launched her new radio show, Zoe Ball in the Afternoon, on Greatest Hits Radio on Monday. The program marks her return to radio after a two-year hiatus, during which she focused on spending more time with her family. As the opening track, Ball chose "I've Got the Music in Me" by the Kiki Dee Band, a song that has become closely associated with her career. "I can tell you excitement levels are currently peaking," Ball told her audience, expressing her joy at rejoining the radio scene. She also thanked Ken Bruce, her former co-host on BBC Radio 2, for welcoming her back as his neighbor on the airwaves. Ball will be on air from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, before passing the reins to Simon Mayo, a well-known radio presenter. Ball stepped down from her BBC Radio 2 show in December 2022, when she was replaced by Emma Willis, who now co-hosts the popular TV show Strictly Come Dancing. However, Ball clarified that she has not entirely left the BBC behind. "I'm grateful to the BBC because they changed my life on numerous occasions and looked after me," she said. "They continue to do amazing things, but there is a lot of great stuff happening in commercial radio." Her decision to return to Greatest Hits Radio reflects her interest in exploring new opportunities while still maintaining her connection to the BBC. In an interview with Radio Times, Ball described receiving the offer to join Greatest Hits Radio as "a gorgeous gift and fabulous timing." She emphasized that her new show will feature a mix of music from the Seventies, Eighties, and Nineties—eras she has a deep love for. "A lot of my record collection is from the Seventies," she said, adding that she feels like there's a "hippy in my heart" and wishes she had been at the legendary Woodstock festival. Ball also highlighted the importance of audience interaction, saying she is eager to connect with the Greatest Hits Radio listeners and get to know them better. Ball's new show will air from Monday to Friday, between 1 and 4 p.m., and promises to bring a mix of classic hits, engaging conversations, and a warm, familiar presence to the airwaves. Fans of her previous work on BBC Radio 2 will likely find much to enjoy in her new role, as she continues to share her passion for music and connection with listeners.
