Rwanda is tackling a cybersecurity skills gap by partnering with telecoms to train students in job-ready skills through its national CyberHub.
Rwanda boosts cybersecurity training
Rwanda is working to address a shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals by deepening partnerships between its national training center and major telecom companies. The National Cybersecurity Authority (NCSA) has signed agreements with MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda to ensure that cybersecurity education meets the needs of the job market and gives students and graduates hands-on experience.CyberHub launched in 2025
The CyberHub, a national training and innovation center focused on cybersecurity, opened in October 2025 at the University of Rwanda’s College of Science and Technology in Kigali. The center plans to train up to 200 people annually, with at least 30% of them being women, to build a more diverse workforce in the field.Teachers trained for cybersecurity education
In September 2026, 24 teachers from technical and vocational education institutions completed a ten-day specialized training program. This initiative, involving the NCSA, the Rwanda TVET Board, and the International Labour Organization, aims to improve the quality of cybersecurity education in the country.Cybersecurity experts highlight skills gap
At a conference in Kigali in October 2026, representatives from the ISACA Rwanda Chapter noted the limited number of professionals with advanced cybersecurity qualifications. However, no official data is available to precisely measure the size of the skills gap in the country.National strategy includes training and partnerships
Cybersecurity training is a key part of Rwanda’s National Cybersecurity Strategy 2024-2029. The strategy aims to build expertise, develop specialized education, and create public-private partnerships. By linking the CyberHub with MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda, the NCSA is aligning training with the needs of companies that operate Rwanda’s digital infrastructure.Telecom companies offer practical training
MTN Rwanda will provide internships and on-the-job training to help learners gain real-world experience. The company also plans to tailor its training programs to the skills needed by employers. Airtel Rwanda offers internships in areas such as networks, computing, enterprise solutions, and mobile financial services.
