A single case of hantavirus was confirmed in France this summer, prompting the quarantine of 45 individuals considered to be at high risk of exposure. The infected individual was a Franco-Argentine teenager who was on vacation with his family in both France and Spain. The strain identified was a variant of hantavirus found in the Andes region of South America. The French Ministry of Health emphasized that this case was isolated and not connected to the MV Hondius incident, which occurred in May 2026 and involved a different outbreak. The teenager was tested at the CHU de Limoges on July 23, but it took 15 days for the results to be confirmed, with the diagnosis finally made on August 5. During this time, the patient continued to travel, including a trip to Normandy where he visited family. On August 6, the Ministry of Health reported that the patient was isolated with his family and showed no symptoms. The delay in receiving results was due to the initial blood tests not being conclusive, requiring further analysis by the national reference center for infectious diseases. Regional health agencies in Île-de-France, Normandy, and Nouvelle-Aquitaine began tracing individuals who may have come into contact with the teenager. Two individuals were repatriated by private jet to undergo quarantine. The patient’s grandfather, who lives in an Ehpad (a type of residential care facility for the elderly), was placed in isolation for ten days. During this time, he was not allowed to communicate with his wife due to concerns about hygiene and preventing the spread of the virus. In addition, ten staff members from the CHU de Limoges were quarantined, and four nurses had to be replaced during a period of extreme heat. Approximately 250 people considered to be at low risk—such as train and air travelers and SNCF (French rail company) personnel—were asked to monitor themselves for symptoms. However, the CHU de Limoges, regional health agencies, and Santé Publique France did not respond to media inquiries, directing questions to the Ministry of Health for further information.
