The Oceanian Nations Cup begins this week, but uncertainty looms over Papua New Guinea's participation and Tahiti's team composition.
Tournament start date uncertain
The ninth edition of the Oceanian Nations Cup in beach soccer is set to begin this Thursday in Aorai Tini Hau, but concerns have arisen due to Papua New Guinea’s uncertain participation. The Oceanian Football Confederation (OFC), which organizes the event, has not yet decided whether to adjust the schedule, as the PNG delegation has not arrived on Fenua. The Tahitian Football Federation (FTF) is awaiting the OFC’s decision, and the Tiki Toa team is preparing to face New Caledonia either this Thursday or Saturday, depending on the outcome.Tahiti’s team reduced to 12 players
The Tahitian squad initially had 15 players but has been reduced to 12 to meet the Oceanian Nations Cup’s regulations. Raimana Li Fung Kuee, the coach-player of the Tiki Toa, prioritized experience over youth and left out three young players: Heremataarii Hatitio, Tehoarii Lesca, and Donny Tepa. Two young players, Illiwai Resopawiro and Viritua Tiaiho, will debut in an international event. Kuee stated the team has a strong composition with quality across all positions and that he will coach and play due to the absences of two key players.Tahiti and Solomon Islands as main rivals
The Solomon Islands are seen as Tahiti’s main rivals, as both teams have shared the competition’s victories with four each. However, Tahiti has been dominant in recent years, winning the Oceanian Nations Cup in 2011, 2019, 2023, and 2024. The Solomon Islands have older dominance with titles in 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2013. In the 2024 edition, both teams were evenly matched, with Tahiti winning the final in Honiara by a narrow score of 3-2.Tahiti’s confidence and challenges
Kuee mentioned that the Tiki Toa team has grown stronger through matches against European elite teams, which is a positive sign for the Oceanian tournament. However, he emphasized that the team will respect all opponents, with the Solomon Islands being the primary challenge. The Tiki Toa will also face New Caledonia, whose players are familiar with Tahitian football due to their experience playing in Tahiti. Teams from New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands have stated they are well prepared and have ambitions for the tournament.Tahiti’s current team lineup
The current Tahitian selection includes goalkeepers Teave Teamotuaitau and Franck Revel, defenders Heimanu Taiarui, Matatia Paama, Gervais Chan Kat, and Viritua Tiaiho, midfielders Illiwai Resopawiro and Raimana Li Fung Kuee, and attackers Rainui Tze-Yu, Heirauarii Salem, Tearii Labaste, and Ro'onui Tinirauarii.
