Approximate allowance or unverifiable meter readings: reimbursing home charging for employees remains a puzzle for companies. To facilitate the daily lives of professionals, the St-Etienne-based startup Ewera has launched a web application that uses vehicle data to measure the actual energy received by the company car. A blind spot in the electrification of fleets According to the 2026 Arval Mobility Observatory barometer, 67% of companies have already integrated electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles into their fleet. But a subject remains poorly addressed: the home charging of employees. On paper, everyone benefits. The employee charges in the evening or during remote work days. The company reimburses the electricity at an amount much lower than that of public charging. It also eases its own parking lots, sometimes impossible to equip due to lack of land or sufficient electricity subscription. For the reimbursement of expenses incurred by the employee, some companies opt for a monthly allowance. A simple solution to manage, but fragile in case of inspection. No flat rate specific to charging has been published so far by the URSSAF. However, in principle, any payment to an employee is considered as remuneration subject to contributions, unless the employer proves that it is the exact reimbursement of professional expenses actually incurred. "The question for companies is: how to avoid being taken advantage of?" summarizes Sylvain Bruyas. This former Mercedes employee created Ewera in October 2024. Based in Saint-Etienne, the five-person startup supports about thirty companies, mainly mid-sized enterprises, in their electric transition: training teams, managing access and monitoring charging stations on site. It was at the request of its clients that the application dedicated to home charging was born. It has been tested since the beginning of the year in about ten companies. A direct connection to the vehicle No box, no equipment at home, and about three minutes to activate the service... To retrieve the energy consumed, Ewera connects to the vehicle via the manufacturer's API and with the driver's agreement. All electric vehicles are now connected, and fleets mainly rely on recent models, so compatibility does not pose a problem according to the manager. Beyond fully electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids are also supported. Dedicated charging station, reinforced socket or even standard socket, as long as it is the energy received by the car that is accounted for, the charging equipment is no longer important. A key point for tenants who cannot always install a wallbox. On the other hand, the company sets a single rate per kWh and the reimbursement is made from the consumption recorded by the application. Each month, the employee consults his charges and the amount that will be paid to him. On the other hand, the employer has the same data for all drivers. The solution has another advantage over the supervised charging station: only the company car is monitored. The employee is free to plug in his spouse's or relatives' vehicle on his charging station without it being reported to the employer. "We do not track the car" Accessing a car's data inevitably raises concerns among employees and CSEs. Ewera explains that it has solved the problem by limiting what it transmits. The employer sees the date and category of each charge (home, company site or outside), but not the time or location of the charges made elsewhere. The raw data remains with Ewera. "With a fuel card, your employer knows where, at what time and for what quantity you filled up. We tell you less," argues Sylvain Bruyas. A management tool for fleet managers Beyond reimbursement, the platform gives the fleet manager a precise view of usage. For each driver, it calculates the distribution of charges between home, company sites and outside. "We can see that Paul charges 30% at the company, 30% at home and 30% outside, and understand if that is normal," illustrates Sylvain Bruyas. The challenge is primarily financial. According to Ewera, a full charge costs 12 euros at home, compared to more than 36 euros on the public network. Each external charging point transferred to home or the company site directly translates into the energy budget of the fleet. The data allows identifying drivers who rely too much on public charging stations and encourages them to change their habits. They are also used to better guide investments. An employee whose home charging station cost 1,500 to 2,000 euros, but who only charges at the office, reveals a poor equipment choice. Especially if he occupies a spot that would be needed by a colleague without a home charging solution. "We can optimize, understand and modify behaviors, or decide to make investments or not," summarizes the founder. And since nothing is installed at the employee's home, the question of the charging stations to retrieve upon departure no longer arises. 10 euros per month and per vehicle Ewera charges 10 euros per month and per vehicle. As usual, the rate is reduced depending on the size of the fleet. In France, the startup shows modest beginnings. It aims to connect 300 vehicles by the end of 2026, and 1,000 by the end of 2027. A already contested market Supported by the MIND program of Saint-Etienne Métropole and Bpifrance, Ewera is preparing a funding round for 2027. The young startup is, however, not alone in this niche. VoltaBack has a similar offer: no mandatory connected charging station, no smart cable or box, with the possibility of cross-referencing the vehicle's data with that of the Linky meter. ChargiZ also connects directly to the vehicle via the manufacturers' interfaces. Other players, on the other hand, bet on equipment. Chargemap Business offers a connected cable developed with Mister EV and NRGkick, which also sells its own billing platform, Charging4Fleets. Virta, on the other hand, relies on a connected charging station or wallbox at home.
