Enric Mas, a 31-year-old Spanish cyclist, finally claimed victory in the Vuelta 2026, one of cycling’s most prestigious races known as a Grand Tour. This was Mas’s first Grand Tour win, despite having participated in the event eight times before. He had previously finished second three times (in 2018, 2021, and 2022) and third once (in 2024). His triumph came after Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar withdrew from the race, allowing Mas, who was leading the Movistar team, to pull away from other strong competitors like Primoz Roglic and Félix Gall. Mas’s career has been marked by both promise and adversity. He was identified as a rising talent early on, winning the Spanish junior time trial championship in 2012. However, injuries and setbacks have often derailed his progress. Spanish media had lost confidence in him, comparing him to cycling legends like Alberto Contador and Alejandro Valverde. In 2022, he suffered multiple crashes in key races, which affected both his physical and mental health. He required psychological support to recover and regain his place in the peloton. Later, he underwent surgery for a venous thrombosis in his left leg, adding to the challenges he faced. Tadej Pogacar, who withdrew from the race, praised Mas before his exit. He recalled that during the 2022 Tour of Lombardy, Mas had shown equal form. Pogacar handed over the leader’s jersey to Mas, who initially refused to wear it on the podium, explaining that he felt it would be disrespectful to Pogacar. However, Mas proved his worth by winning the 9th stage at the summit of Aitana. He described the experience of wearing the leader’s jersey as exciting and likened it to the joy of a child. Mas also expressed understanding of what Pogacar must have felt when he first earned the jersey. After Pogacar’s withdrawal, Mas took on the role of leader calmly and with focus, traits that have become his strengths. Criticisms of his performance began to fade as he maintained a strong lead, gaining 27 seconds on his rivals in the 18th stage. Despite a long time trial, which is not his strongest discipline, Mas lost only 33 seconds to Roglic, preserving his lead. His team’s sports director, José Joaquín Rojas, praised Mas’s perseverance, noting that the press had been harsh in the past due to his injuries and setbacks. Now, Mas can reflect on his journey from a struggling rider to an uncontested winner, marking a significant redemption in his career.
