Aldi is testing a new grocery delivery service in the UK, working with Deliveroo, and plans to expand it nationwide by next year. The trial allows customers to order up to 2,000 items, such as fruits, vegetables, meat, bread, dairy products, and Aldi's exclusive Specialbuys. Shoppers can choose a specific delivery time or place an on-demand order for faster service.
The trial is currently available at eight Aldi stores across the UK, including locations in Ashford, Dover, Norwich, Ipswich, Letchworth Garden City, Margate, Strood, and Tamworth. If the pilot is successful, Aldi aims to roll out the service across the country early next year. Aldi UK's CEO, Giles Hurley, said the partnership with Deliveroo aligns with the company’s goal of making affordable groceries more accessible. This follows successful delivery trials with DoorDash in the U.S. and Australia.
However, Deliveroo drivers have expressed concerns about the new system. Riders will now be responsible for picking items from the store, a task typically handled by in-store staff. Deliveroo says the rider app guides them through orders, listing items in a logical order and allowing them to scan products with their phones. Riders can also report missing items and pay using a prepaid card. Some drivers, though, feel this is outside their role. One rider said, "There's no way I'm doing the picking. We're delivery drivers. Not pickers." Another described the system as a "menace," though Deliveroo emphasized that participation is optional and that it offers an extra earning opportunity.
This is not the first time such issues have arisen. Tesco, another major UK retailer, recently launched similar on-demand delivery services with UberEats and Deliveroo. Some staff described the experience as a "nightmare," noting that the introduction of delivery services has disrupted store operations. Employees reported having to leave their usual tasks, such as operating tills, to help pack orders, which has led to customer complaints.
