The 2026-27 English Football League (EFL) fixtures have been officially announced, bringing back several historic rivalries that have shaped the landscape of English football over decades. These rivalries, rooted in geography, history, and sometimes mutual dislike, are set to reignite fan passions across the country. For Championship clubs, this season promises intense matches and emotional encounters, as long-dormant derbies return to the schedule. One of the most anticipated fixtures is the Millwall vs. West Ham derby, scheduled for Saturday at 12:30 BST. This will be the first meeting between the two clubs in nearly 15 years. Known as the "Dockers Derby," the rivalry dates back to 1899 when Millwall Athletic beat West Ham 2-1 in the FA Cup. The two teams have faced each other 60 times in total, with only seven meetings in the past 33 years. The last derby was in 2011-12, with a draw at The Den and a 2-1 West Ham victory at Upton Park. West Ham has not won at Millwall's home ground since December 1988, with the Londoners winning three and drawing two of the five meetings on home soil since. Another major derby is the Black Country clash between Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion, set for Sunday at 12:00 BST. This will be the first meeting between the two clubs since a tense FA Cup fourth-round tie in January 2024, which Wolves won 2-0 at The Hawthorns. The match was halted for 38 minutes due to crowd trouble, leading to a fine for West Brom. The rivalry, which has existed for over 140 years, will see the 164th senior meeting between the sides. The last league game between the clubs in front of fans was in February 2012, when West Brom won 5-1 at Molineux. Other notable derbies include the East Lancashire rivalry between Blackburn and Burnley, which will resume in late November after a year's hiatus, with a return fixture in early February. Burnley and Bolton will meet for the first time in nearly 11 years on Boxing Day, with Bolton having won only one of the past seven meetings. In Wales, the south Wales derby returns as Cardiff, promoted to the Championship last season, faces Swansea in late November and mid-March. The rivalry, which began in 1912, saw Cardiff win the last match 3-0 in January 2025. Swansea's last victory over Cardiff came in March 2024, though they achieved a historic double-double in the rivalry in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.
